IT help · Adelaide and remote

Automate the job you do by hand. Fix the one that stopped.

I’m Brad, and IT is my main line of work: scripts and automations, Home Assistant, servers and backups, AI wired into the tools you already use, and rescue work. One person in Adelaide, working remotely, at $90 an hour, quoted before I start.

what I do

six kinds of job

Automation and scripts

Anything you do twice, I can usually do once. I sort what's worth automating from what would cost more to replace than it saves, then ship the wins first.

  • Invoicing, lead capture and reporting
  • The recurring email you keep meaning to template
  • Scheduled Python scripts that run without you

Home Assistant and home automation

Home Assistant on hardware you own, with no vendor lock-in. My own house runs on it, and the same setup scales down for a unit and up for a small office.

  • Climate, lighting, energy, presence and voice
  • Custom ESPHome firmware on off-the-shelf sensors
  • Tariff-aware load scheduling

Servers, backups and self-hosting

Private servers you own: Proxmox clusters, ZFS storage, automated backups and failover, with monitoring that shows what they're doing before something breaks.

  • Automated backups, with alerts
  • Grafana and InfluxDB dashboards
  • Moving off public clouds where it makes sense

AI wired into your tools

Models running on your own hardware so your data stays there, or API integrations with cost controls when that fits better.

  • Answers drawn from your own documents
  • Transcription and voice
  • OpenAI and Anthropic APIs wired into the tools you use

Small web apps and data clean-ups

A small app or API built for one job, and the data behind it cleaned up so you can trust it again.

  • Next.js, React and TypeScript front ends
  • APIs and database design
  • The customer list, cleaned up

Rescue work on the thing that stopped

The half-finished script, the integration that almost works, the legacy thing nobody else wants to touch. I read what's there charitably and fix it before replacing anything.

  • Reviving the Raspberry Pi
  • Modernising what's there before replacing it
  • Documenting what survives so the next person isn't lost

how a job goes

four steps, the first one yours
  1. 01

    Send me a message

A vague idea, a half-written brief or a screenshot of the thing that's annoying you is enough. I reply within a day on weekdays.

  2. 02

    A free 20-minute call

By phone or video. You tell me what's going on, and I tell you straight whether I can help and whether it's a small job.

  3. 03

    A quote before I start

The hours, written down, before any work begins. Anything bigger than a day gets a fixed quote and a 50% deposit. No surprise invoices.

  4. 04

    The work, then a write-up

I do the job and hand over a plain-English write-up of what changed. Bigger jobs get 30 days of fix-it support after handover.

questions

8 answered
Do I need to be in Adelaide?

No. I'm in Adelaide, on ACST (UTC+09:30), and work remote first. Coming to you anywhere in Adelaide is included with a day block, and quoted otherwise.

Will I know the price before you start?

Yes. Small jobs are $90 an hour, quoted before I start, with a one-hour minimum. Anything bigger than a day gets a fixed quote worked out from the hour estimate, with a 50% deposit to start. No surprise invoices.

How do the prepaid blocks work?

Half a day is $350 for 4 hours, used within a month. A day is $650 for 8 hours, used within three months, and includes coming to you anywhere in Adelaide. Paying up front brings the rate to about $88 and $81 an hour.

What happens in the free 20 minutes?

A call by phone or video to work out what the job is and whether it's a small one, before you pay anything. If I'm not the right person for it, I'll tell you straight.

Can I send a written brief?

Yes, please. I'm AuDHD and prefer written briefs to long meetings. A few lines on what's wrong, a screenshot or the error message is plenty to start with.

Will you work on something someone else built?

Yes, that's what rescue work is. I read the existing code charitably, modernise what's there before replacing it, and document what survives so the next person isn't lost.

Do you build websites too?

Yes, at fixed prices on their own pages: for small businesses from $490 plus $29 a month at tech2urdoor.org/business, and for athletes, coaches and creators from $149 plus $12 a month at tech2urdoor.org/creators.

Do the prices include GST?

The price shown is the total you pay. Nothing is added on top, and your invoice spells out the GST position.

Need a website instead? Fixed prices for small businesses, from $490, and for athletes, coaches and creators, from $149.
